“Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day”, so said The Mamas and the Papas! So it is, that generally no one likes Mondays, except retired people, of course! The end of the weekend, the start of the week at work.
However, now there is Blue Monday, which this year is 16th January. So why has this particular Monday been stigmatised as the worst Monday of the year? Well, it is the third Monday in the New Year when apparently, we are already failing to keep to our resolutions, the weather is cold and gloomy, and the post Christmas credit card payments are due. Overindulgence during the festive season has probably resulted in tighter waistbands too.
How did this particular date become set in our calendars? Would you believe a scientist reckoned he calculated it according to some parameters, including debt, motivation, and weather, which is ludicrous as they are not compatible variables!
Nonetheless, while a combination of these variables may be true, and could certainly impact on our mood, there are other ways to look at this time of year. It is a new beginning, bulbs that were planted last year will soon be appearing, such as in the UK where snowdrops are the first to herald Spring. Plans for the year ahead can be made, and that is always a cheerful occupation, booking holidays, or visits with friends and family.
Meanwhile, I shall light the log burner, cuddle up on the sofa and read a good book. Sound good to you too? I hear “A Woman Scorned” is a good read!
