I am continuing to make art journal pages and am finding it extremely therapeutic. While I am working on something, I am just mulling over the concept just as I would if I were sitting quietly in prayer or in solitude when I go for a walk outside. I will have more to show you next month (I used a pre-released kit for one) but this time around, I used a prompt on JessicaSprague.com that was simply one word: freedom. I knew right away that this page would reflect my spiritual life and I got a song going in my head by Francesca Battistelli that has a line I really love – on my own I’m so clumsy but on your shoulders I am free ~ free to be me ~ and you’re free to be you. I also knew I wanted to play around with one of my favorite kits – Earthy. I made this page in Photoshop so there’s all kinds of blending and layering and inky stuff but I believe you can make a journal page in any software and in any style of your choosing. I have made many, many pages with no pictures in them and that is a form of creative journaling and self-expression. Some are blendy like this one and others have a more traditional paper style to them. If you want to try your hand at it, I encourage you to do so – there’s no right or wrong way to do it – it’s YOUR self expression and exploration of YOUR thoughts. It doesn’t matter if no one else understands it if it is meaningful to you!
When I look at my page, I see all sorts of things that remind me of what I was thinking and working through as I made this – little things like how the butterfly emerges from what looks like death to a beautiful new creation, how the Bible says we are made white as snow (Isaiah 1:18) – with the little white flowers, how Jesus shines in our lives (the sparkles), how the love of God encircles us, how our freedom shines in contrast to enslavement. The verse from Isaiah 61 is just a snippet of a passage that has been very meaningful in my life. This page is like an art prayer to me. I hope it blesses you too.
